If you could sum up the 2018 Tennessee Titans in one word, most people would use the word inconsistent.
But sometimes in life, two opposing views can both be true. So the glass half full person would instead use the word streaky.
Regardless of the semantics, the often up and down Titans are 8-6 and still in the playoff race thanks to an impressive and resounding 17-0 shutout of the New York Giants.
Tennessee has now won three straight, and if the course of the season is any indication, then the Titans could be…I said could be….streaking their way into the playoffs.
After an opening day loss at Miami, Tennessee rattled off three straight victories over Houston, Jacksonville, and Philadelphia.
Riding high and tied atop the division at 3-1, the Titans then dropped three straight games to Buffalo, Baltimore, and the Los Angeles Chargers on a failed two-point conversion in London.
After their bye week, the reeling 3-4 Titans saved their season with improbable back to back victories over the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots.
Back in the thick of the AFC South title race, the surging 5-4 Titans were inexplicably blown out two weeks in a row by the division rival Colts and Texans….being outscored 72-27 in the process.
And with their backs against the proverbial wall, the now-desperate 5-6 Titans strung together three consecutive wins for the second time this season after disposing of the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and red-hot New York Giants.
It’s been a roller coaster ride of emotions for Titans fans. Just when they think the team is trending in the right direction they fall short. And just when they think the team is down for the count, the Titans somehow pull themselves off the mat and continue to throw haymakers in the middle of the ring.
Hopefully for all involved, this current streak is the last one. Because if it is, the Titans could very well secure the 6th and final AFC playoff spot.
Of course, winning their last two games is no guarantee, but as the saying goes, the football gods help those who help themselves.
And the Titans are doing their part.
